Steel Bridge
快猫成版视频鈥檚 recently competed in the 2025 Student Steel Bridge Competition National Finals, finishing seventh overall and earning the Frank J. Hatfield Ingenuity Award for its creative approach to bridge design and construction.

The seventh-place finish highlights one of the best years for the competition team and KSU was the lone Georgia school to qualify for the national competition. More than 200 teams compete in regional qualifiers each year, with only 45 advancing to the national finals.

鈥淭his team exemplifies what SPCEET is all about: creativity, collaboration, and excellence in engineering,鈥 said Lawrence Whitman, dean of the Southern Polytechnic College of Engineering and Engineering Technology. 鈥淧lacing among the top in the nation and winning the ingenuity award is a tremendous accomplishment. We are incredibly proud of them.鈥

In addition to the award, team members earned a $2,000 American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) scholarship. Team president Anthony Marteniuc said the recognition was long overdue.

鈥淔inally getting that award really meant something,鈥 said Marteniuc, a civil engineering student. 鈥淓very year, we come up with something that鈥檚 different. This year, it finally got the attention it deserved.鈥

Held annually, the AISC Student Steel Bridge Competition challenges engineering students to design a scale-model steel bridge under strict specifications. Teams are scored in several categories, including stiffness, construction speed, and structural efficiency. This year鈥檚 competition challenged students to navigate a 13-foot-wide 鈥渞iver,鈥 the longest span in competition history, forcing teams to rethink their assembly strategies.

鈥淭eams were allowed to use a barge, a temporary support platform placed in the river zone to assist during assembly, but that would have doubled our builder cost,鈥 Marteniuc said. 鈥淪o, we decided to innovate. We created a non-barge build strategy that worked, and teams at nationals started copying it. That鈥檚 when we knew we were onto something.鈥

KSU鈥檚 bridge was assembled by a three-person build team made up entirely of new recruits Marco Cruz, Fernando Kirkconnell, and Daniel Millan.

鈥淚t鈥檚 not common to have such a small build team,鈥 Marteniuc said. 鈥淭he fact they were all new team members and still performed at that level is incredible. They鈥檙e the reason we got to nationals.鈥

Marteniuc attributes the team鈥檚 success to a culture of discipline, accountability, and a strong sense of legacy.

鈥淭here鈥檚 a history here,鈥 he said. 鈥淲hen you meet alumni who were on the team 20 years ago, their eyes light up. They remember the hours they spent in competition and the wins. It motivates us to keep it going.鈥
